News: Navman announce the Spirit S100 satnav

Yesterday we were invited to London for a preview of the latest Satnav to be announced by Navman. Today Navman announce the Spirit S100 PND sporting a new Aluminium case and a flat screen with no bevel. The new S100 is probably the thinnest Satnav measuring just 13.5mm thick.

If aluminium styling and flat bevel-less screens remind you of a certain iXxx product range then you would not be too surprised to hear about the new "Glide Touch" user interface. With a redesigned user interface Navman have done away with the hardware buttons to control the satnav and have now implemented a full touch screen interface.

The icons are colour coded and there are 3 different methods to find your destination: Go; Find; and Explore. There are pop-up menus and display items, with a dockable information panel.

The map display itself is now presented using "ClearView" maps, reducing the information on the screen and clearly highlighting your route. Also introduced are 3D-Landmarks in the cities and 3D Junction views with "real" signpost information.

Also introduced with the Navman S100 is a true pedestrian mode. This uses Tele Atlas City-Maps and provides routing on footpaths and underpasses whilst avoiding dangerous intersections.

The Navman S100 should start appearing in the stores in November with a price tag of £199.

Click here for our news article. There are a few screenshots followed by the full Navman press release.

News: Tagggit, GPS Enabled Mobile Social Network - Beta Test

pocketgpsworld.com We've been contacted by the authors of Tagggit, a Mobile Social Network application.

Tagggit allows users to create tags of places of interest on their phone or on their computer. A tag can be a favourite pub, free parking spot, wifi-hotspots etc. Users can then share these tags with other users (or keep them private), or seach for tags in their current location. There are other site features like communities, friend-finder and event planning that users can avail of and best of all it's FREE!

As it is still in Beta test, Taggit is currently only available for Nokia n95 handsets. The application allows users to tag areas of interest around them, grabs their GPS location and uploads text and images that the user has submitted. The user can also search for tags in his/her area, and can view comments, pictures, ratings of the chosen tag. A map is also displayed where a user can see the location of a tag, and where the user is currently located, so they can figure out how to find it.

Reviews: Proclip Passthrough holder for iPhone 3G

pocketgpsworld.com We are looking into the GPS capabilities of the iPhone 3G, and are working on porting some of our tools to that new platform.

The iPhone 3G provides a few challenges. It does not come with any car charger adapter. It is incompatible with the vast majority of in-car iPOD dock adapters. And there were no car holders available for the iPhone 3G. At least this part is now changing.

Subscribers: The PocketGPSWorld.com International Speed Camera Database Has Just Been Updated

Speed CamerasVersion 6.102 - 08 OCT 08

This release sees 152 static and mobile speed cameras added/modified across the various speed camera databases by 81 users. Please keep submitting all sightings of mobile speed cameras so we can keep our database up to date with active sites. Apparently-inactive sites are regularly removed from the database.

This release also sees a major change in the way that Temporary Cameras are handled. Previously all temporary Gatsos, Monitrons and Truvelos were placed in the Temp file which was not speed zoned, whereas temporary SPECS were always in the SPECS file and speed zoned - but with no way to differentiate between temporary and permanent installations. As of todays release, all temporary cameras are prefixed with a "t" (tSPECS, tGATSO etc) and contained in the same files as the permanent installations. This also means that the Temp file is now disused so there is 1 less file to download / set up (although the file may still be downloaded for certain release formats until the next release!)

Please click here for the full breakdown of country, speed camera type and number. All members submitting qualifying reports of static/mobile speed cameras will be credited with lifetime memberships by 17:00 09 Oct 08.

The Garmin GPSR is currently 6.092 (12 Sep 08)
The NavigationMaster database is currently 5.113 (13th Nov 07)
The MapFactor/Directions database is currently 6.054 (21st May 08)

Dont forget our RSS feed which is updated every time we release the speed camera database. Simply right click on the RSS image and select copy shortcut, then post the link into your favourite RSS reader.

The speed camera submission page and download page can be found by clicking here. You can submit new speed cameras in one of two ways - either an OV2 file created by POICapture or individual camera locations.

A beginner's guide to the speed camera database can be found here, and some installation instructions for most units can be found here.

Please watch for further announcements on the homepage or sign up to our occasional newsletter alerts which carry full details of future speed camera database releases. The newsletter signup box is located on the top left of all site pages. Your privacy is important to us, we do not sell on your email details.

News: Digital Radio Traffic Service to launch in Australia

pocketgpsworld.com Sentinel, an Australian live content company has announced that it has begun live demonstration broadcasts of real-time traffic information via digital radio.

Working with Commercial Radio Australia, Sentinel plans to stream detailed traffic reports directly to satellite navigation devices. News: TomTom shares drop as consumer spend declines

pocketgpsworld.com Source: GPS Business News

TomTom's share price has fallen to a new low following concerns about possible re-financing of the sat-nav manufacturer being necessary. TomToms liquidity had already being called into question following the take over of TeleAtlas earlier in the year. On Friday TomTom shares were trading under 11 euros compared with their high of 66 euros in October of last year.

Falling margins on PND's and the economic climate reducing consumer spend with worse to come has resulted in fears of a refinancing deal being necessary.

TomTom are not alone with many fearing huge drops in profit compared with earlier forecasts and it is possible that some of the smaller market players may disappear as a result.

News: PocketGPSWorld is now on Facebook

pocketgpsworld.com We've finally succumbed and joined Facebook!

We recognise the huge impact social networking sites have had on the way people interact and pass on information. As a web based organisation it makes sense for PocketGPSWorld to become involved and so we have set up a PocketGPSWorld Facebook 'Page' which can be accessed by Facebook members here.

The page concept is in its infancy but we'll be building the content over the coming weeks with videos, pictures etc. We already have .rss links to our front page news items and if you're a Blackberry, iPhone or other Facebook enabled cell-phone user then it becomes very easy to keep in touch with all the news here at PocketGPSWorld.Com towers.

So if you're a PocketGPSWorld Forum member then we'd welcome you becoming a 'Fan' of the PocketGPSWorld.Com Facebook Page, drop in, say hi and post on the wall.

News: Pocket GPS Poster Community Call!

speed camerasPlease help spread the word about our Speed Camera Warnings. More users = more camera spotters = continued highest possible accuracy.

Do you run a shop or petrol station? Your cashier point-of-sale or a window position would be an ideal place to display a small A4 size poster! Other ideas might include displaying the poster in your workplace or college. For instance in the canteen, toilets or staffroom (though please ask permission first!) They can also be given out as flyers.

1. Download and print the Wild West version poster here or the FBI version poster here.

2. Also, please pass it on to your family, friends and colleagues.

3. Position your poster and, if you've got the time and inclination, take a photo and post it (or link to it) on this forum. We'd love to see it!

News: Mio Announce Partnership with Skoda

pocketgpsworld.com Hot on the heels of TomTom's new partnership with Renault, Mio yesterday announced their partnership with Skoda. The announcement was made at the Paris Motor Show and will be an option on the Skoda Fabia, Fabia Combi and Roomster. Similar to Garmin's partnerships with Volvo and Mini, the device will, essentially, be a standard portable device (similar to the Mio Moov series) but with an integrated active cradle built into the car. The mount and device set up has also passed the European NCAP crash test. The devices will be available from October (i.e. soon!).
